Melissa was finally laid to rest months later. The church was full, not of devotion, but of regret. Those who had judged her were now silent.
Gabriel did not cry during the ceremony.
He wept later, at the cemetery, when he heard his mother whisper at the grave:
"Forgive me for leaving you here."
That was the deepest wound of all — not only what had been done, but also the guilt left behind.
