There was a second recording.
In it, Lily paced around the living room, visibly agitated and distressed, while Sarah followed her with a phone raised and recording.
“Come on, Lily,” Sarah’s voice said, pleasant and coaxing.
“Let’s make sure Daddy sees how you behave.”
The child was crying and asking her to stop.
Sarah continued filming.
Marcus forced himself to watch the entire recording.
He believed he owed it to his daughter to know exactly what had happened while he had been traveling and assuming she was safe.
Then came the decisive file, recorded several days later.
Sarah was pacing beside the patio doors while talking on the phone, unaware that the home surveillance system she had apparently forgotten about was capturing her words.
“Two more episodes should be enough,” Sarah was saying into the receiver.
She paused to listen.
“No, Julian.
Marcus still thinks the arrangement is meant to safeguard Lily’s inheritance.”
Marcus lifted his head.
Ryan reached over and paused the video.
For a long moment, neither man spoke.
There it was in Sarah’s own voice.
The name Julian.
The reference to an arrangement.
The confirmation that Marcus was being misled about something supposedly designed to protect Lily’s inheritance.
His wife had put something in his child’s drink, recorded what happened afterward, and was coordinating with another man as part of a larger plan.
Sarah believed, when that recording was made, that her husband suspected nothing.
In one respect, she was still right.
Marcus suspected nothing anymore.
Marcus knew.
Chapter 11 — Grab Your Backpack
At 1:17 that afternoon, Marcus drove back into his Greenwich driveway.
Sarah was standing near the entrance, dressed to go out.
Her smile disappeared the moment she saw him carrying his suitcase.
“What are you doing back?” she said.
“Did your flight get delayed?”
“Meeting was canceled,” Marcus said, evenly, looking past her into the hallway.
“Lily.
Go grab your backpack.
We’re going to Grandma Evelyn’s.”
Sarah quickly stepped toward him.
“Marcus, you can’t just disrupt her routine like this—”
“Yes,” he said, “I can.”
At that moment, Lily appeared from her bedroom with her small canvas backpack clutched tightly against her chest.
Marcus took her little hand.
Together they walked out the door, passing Sarah as she continued objecting about routines and stability.
Marcus did not argue with her.
He did not accuse her.
He gave her nothing to react to and nothing that would reveal what he already knew.
The strategy now depended on getting Lily safely away before Sarah understood that anything had changed.
She watched them leave, still apparently believing that Marcus was simply overreacting to his daughter’s clinginess that morning.
She had no idea that the footage had been found.
No idea that evidence was already being gathered.
And no idea that Marcus knew Julian’s name.
Sarah thought she was watching a temporary disruption.
Instead, she was watching the beginning of the end of everything she had spent a year building.
