Not from her, but from the clerk. She was flipping to another page when she suddenly said, “Ma’am… there’s also a guardianship petition here. Temporary, but sealed.”
I covered the phone. "For whom?"
She looked at the name and frowned. "For your father. Filed two months ago."
My father, unnerved by the silence, panicked. "Emily? What are you reading?"
The clerk lowered her voice. "It states that a petition has been filed, claiming he is incapable of managing his finances."
I jumped up so abruptly that my chair scraped the floor.
My father had lied to me, concealed my inheritance, and now needed my signature. But apparently, someone had already tried to take everything from him.
"Who filed this petition?" I asked.
The clerk pointed to the petitioner's name.
