Her words affected me more than I expected.
It hadn’t been rejection. It had been protection.
My mother looked at me.
“But now that I need my children the most, the only one willing to take me in is the one I shut out the most.”
Something shifted inside me again.
I realized I hadn’t been unloved. I had been loved carefully—from a distance.
I nodded slowly.
We didn’t say anything else.
By the time the others arrived, I felt different.
Jack came in first. “Let’s get this over with.”
The rest followed, filling the living room with restless noise.
Then they got straight to it.
“You can’t just force a sale,” Jack said.
“Yeah,” Eliza added. “This house is all we have left.”
